What is a Joomla Template?
Answer
A Joomla Template is one of 5 different Joomla extension types (Components, Modules, Plugins, Templates, and Language Files). The Joomla template holds all the design information, such as stylesheets and images, and also some Javascript. You can think of it as a theme or a skin to your Joomla system, but it is much more than just a skin. There can only be one Joomla template per page.
The specific job of a Joomla template is to tell Joomla where to show Components and Modules on a page and also how to display those modules. Joomla Modules can be displayed in many different variations. Each variation is different in its HTML output structure. One of the most popular variation outputs is XHTML output. A Joomla Template is what tells the modules where to be shown and how to output.
In Joomla 1.5, Joomla templates were allowed to skin any component using the new Joomla MVC structure, this is called Joomla Chrome. These pieces of Joomla chrome are found in the html directory of the joomla template. This is a powerful new addition to Joomla templates.
